Rules checked on · By helloweekends Editors

How to pass a futures prop firm evaluation starts with the rules, not with a strategy. This page is a checklist of the rules that fail accounts and the costs that add up: drawdown, daily loss limit, consistency, minimum days, flat-by times, news windows, contract limits and fees. It is not trading advice, and most people who buy an evaluation do not pass.

1. Read the current rules page, and note the date

Rules change often and usually apply by purchase date. Take Profit Trader cut its minimum from 5 to 3 trading days for Tests bought from August 17, 2026, while older Tests keep 5. Earn2Trade dropped its 10-day minimum for evaluations bought from July 6, 2026. A firm's own pages can also disagree: Topstep's consistency article says 55%, while its Trading Combine parameters page still says 50%. When pages conflict, ask the firm in writing before you trade.

2. Know your drawdown type and where the floor is

The maximum loss is the lowest your balance may go; touching it fails the account. Most firms trail it upward. Example, a LucidPro 50K: you start at $50,000 with a $2,000 limit, so the floor is $48,000. It trails your end-of-day balance, so a $51,000 close lifts it to $49,000. Once your balance passes $52,100, the floor stops at $50,100. On an intraday trailing drawdown, such as Apex's Intraday plans or Take Profit Trader's PRO account, the floor follows open profits too. See trailing drawdown and EOD vs intraday drawdown.

3. Know the daily loss limit

At 50K it is $1,000 at Topstep if you add it, $1,250 on Tradeify Growth, $1,100 on Earn2Trade's Gauntlet Mini and $1,000 on Apex's EOD evaluation. Take Profit Trader and Phidias have none. At the firms that explain it, hitting the daily loss limit stops trading for the day rather than failing the account.

4. Do the consistency math

A consistency rule caps how much of your total profit one day may make up.

  • Topstep, 55%: if you finish at exactly the $3,000 target on 50K, your best day can be at most $1,650 ($1,500 at 50%).
  • Earn2Trade, 30%: at $3,000 profit your best day can be at most $900, which the firm says means at least four profitable days in practice.
  • FundedNext Flex and Legacy, 40%: a breach raises your target to your best day divided by 0.4. A $1,500 best day makes the target $3,750.
  • Take Profit Trader, 50%: breaking it does not fail the Test, but the profit goal rises.

Some evaluations have no consistency rule, including Apex, LucidPro, Tradeify Growth and Phidias.

5. Count the minimum trading days

Apex and Earn2Trade have no minimum. Topstep needs 2 days, Take Profit Trader 3 on new Tests, Phidias Fundamental 3 and MyFundedFutures Rapid EOD 4. LucidPro, Tradeify Growth and Phidias Premium can pass in one day, and Phidias Express to Live has no minimum.

6. Know the flat-by time

Almost every plan sets a time by which positions must be closed: 3:10 p.m. CT at Topstep, 4:10 p.m. ET at MyFundedFutures, 4:45 p.m. ET at Lucid Trading and Tradeify, 4:55 p.m. ET at Take Profit Trader. At Take Profit Trader, missing an earlier product or holiday close liquidates the account. Check the futures market hours before holidays, and see prop firms that allow overnight holding for the two exceptions.

7. Check the news windows, including after you pass

Many evaluations allow news trading, but funded accounts often do not. Take Profit Trader's PRO accounts must be flat from 1 minute before to 1 minute after FOMC statements, NFP and CPI. MyFundedFutures bars positions and orders 2 minutes either side of Tier 1 events, such as FOMC and CPI, on Rapid and Pro funded accounts. On a funded LucidDaily account, holding through high-impact US dollar news is a hard breach. Topstep restricts new opening orders in equity index minis in the 10-minute CPI window. More on news trading.

8. Respect the contract limits

At 50K the limit is 5 minis or 50 micros at Topstep, 6 contracts on Apex's evaluation, 4 minis or 40 micros at Tradeify Growth and Lucid, and 6 minis or 60 micros at Take Profit Trader. At Alpha Futures and MyFundedFutures, a Micro Bitcoin contract counts as a full mini.

9. Read the prohibited list

Apex bans automated trading, news straddles and hedging. Alpha Futures bans bots and more than 100 trades a day. Lucid bans hedging and making more than half your profit from trades held five seconds or less, but allows bots and trade copiers. What is banned at one firm may be fine at another.

10. Plan the total cost

Add up everything before you start, not just the first charge:

  • Monthly plans renew. Three months of a Take Profit Trader 50K Test plus activation: 3 × $170 + $130 = $640.
  • Resets cost extra. A LucidPro 50K bought once and reset twice: $192 + 2 × $115 = $422. At Topstep a reset costs the monthly price.
  • One-time plans can expire. Apex's evaluations give 30 days of access and have no resets.
  • Activation fees come due when you pass: $149 on Topstep's Standard Path, $130 at Take Profit Trader.

Compare first-month costs on the cheapest futures prop firms list, and read activation fee rules by firm. To total these for one plan, use the evaluation cost calculator.

Know the riskA prop firm evaluation is a paid service with simulated trading. Most people who buy one do not pass it. No checklist guarantees a pass, and firms change their rules, pause payouts and close. Not investment advice.

Questions

How long does it take to pass a futures prop firm evaluation?

The minimum ranges from no set number of days, at Apex and Earn2Trade, to 4 days on MyFundedFutures Rapid EOD. Topstep's Trading Combine has no time limit; Apex gives 30 days of access.

Can you pass a prop firm evaluation in one day?

At some firms, yes: Apex, LucidPro, Tradeify Growth and Phidias Premium allow it. Consistency rules make it impossible at others, such as Earn2Trade.

Is there a way to guarantee a pass?

No. Most people who buy an evaluation do not pass it. Knowing the rules only avoids failing on a technicality.

What happens if I fail an evaluation?

You lose that attempt. You can reset it for a fee, wait for a monthly renewal, or buy a new one. Apex's evaluations cannot be reset.
