A prop firm consistency rule limits how much of your total profit can come from one day. The firm divides your best day by your total profit; if the result is above its percentage, you have not met the rule yet. All 12 futures prop firms we track use a consistency rule somewhere, from 20% to 55%, in the evaluation, the funded account or each payout.

How the percentage works

An evaluation is a paid test with simulated trading. The consistency rule is one of its conditions, next to the profit target and the loss limits. The formula is short:

  • Best day ÷ total profit must be at or below the firm's percentage.

Total profit is the net profit over the period the firm checks: the whole evaluation, or the time since your last payout. Take Profit Trader, for example, compares your highest day with your net profit.

To find the total you need, divide your best day by the percentage. With a $1,800 best day, a 50% rule needs $3,600 in total profit, a 40% rule needs $4,500, and a 30% rule needs $6,000.

Worked example: target reached, rule not met

A 50K evaluation with a $3,000 profit target and a 50% consistency rule.

Example only: 50K evaluation, $3,000 profit target, 50% consistency rule.
DayDay's profitTotal profitBest day ÷ totalRule met?
Day 1$1,800$1,800100%No
Day 2$400$2,20082%No
Day 3$800$3,00060%No: target reached, rule not met
Day 4$600$3,60050%Yes

On day 3 the account hits the $3,000 target, but the $1,800 best day is 60% of the total. The trader needs $3,600 in total profit without a bigger best day. Day 4 gets there.

At the firms that say what happens, missing the rule raises the bar rather than failing the account. Take Profit Trader says a breach does not fail the Test; the profit goal rises. FundedNext raises the target to your best day divided by 40%.

Evaluation, funded and payout consistency

  • Evaluation consistency must be met before you pass. Examples: Topstep's Trading Combine, Take Profit Trader's Test (under 50%) and Earn2Trade (30%).
  • Payout consistency is checked each time you ask for a payout, usually on profit since the last payout. Apex uses 50%, Bulenox Master 40%, and Lucid's instant LucidDirect accounts 20%.
  • Rising percentages. Tradeify Lightning starts at 20% for the first payout, then 25%, then 30%.
  • Per position. The5ers applies 40% per position, not per day, in both the evaluation and the funded account.

Some firms apply the rule in only one stage. LucidFlex, LucidDaily and Earn2Trade drop it once you are funded, while LucidPro and Tradeify Growth add it only after you pass. Read both stages before you buy.

Know the riskA prop firm evaluation is a paid service with simulated trading. Most people who buy one do not pass it, and firms change their rules, pause payouts and close. Not investment advice.

Questions

What is a consistency rule in a prop firm?

It is a cap on how much of your total profit can come from one day. If the cap is 50% and your total profit is $3,000, no single day may exceed $1,500 of it.

How do I work out the profit I need?

Divide your best day by the firm's percentage. A $1,800 best day needs $3,600 in total profit under a 50% rule and $4,500 under a 40% rule.

Does breaking the consistency rule fail the account?

At the firms that say, no. Take Profit Trader raises the profit goal, and FundedNext raises the target to your best day divided by 40%. At payout stage, the payout waits until the rule is met.

Which firms have no consistency rule in the evaluation?

Among the 12 firms we track: Apex, Bulenox (Qualification), Phidias, LucidPro, MyFundedFutures Builder, Tradeify Growth, Alpha Futures Zero and FundedNext Rapid. Most of them apply one to payouts instead.
