A daily loss limit (DLL) at a prop firm caps how much you can lose in one trading day. At the firms that say how it works, hitting it is a soft breach: trading stops until the next session and the account stays open. Ten of the 12 futures prop firms we track have a DLL on at least one plan, and four let you choose at purchase.
What a daily loss limit is
A prop firm evaluation is a paid test with simulated trading. It has two separate loss rules. The maximum loss limit, or trailing drawdown, is the lowest your account may ever go. The daily loss limit is a smaller cap that resets each session. On a 50K account a DLL is usually between $1,000 and $1,250, while the maximum loss is about $2,000.
Soft breach vs hard breach
- Soft breach. You hit the limit, trading stops for the rest of the session, and you trade again the next day. Topstep says it is not a rule violation. Apex calls it a soft pause, not a failure. At Lucid every DLL is a soft breach. FundedNext's DLL resets at 5:00 p.m. CT.
- Hard breach. The account fails. At the firms in our table, that is what touching the maximum loss limit does, not the DLL.
For Earn2Trade and The5ers, the pages we read give the amount but do not say whether it is soft or hard, so the table says "Not confirmed".
Optional DLL at purchase
Some firms sell the same account with or without a DLL, and the choice sticks.
- Topstep: the DLL is optional in the Trading Combine and fixed once added ($1,000 on 50K). Adding it cuts the No Activation Fee path price by $10 a month on 50K. It is mandatory in the Live Funded Account.
- Lucid Trading: on LucidPro, LucidFlex and LucidDaily you turn the DLL on or off at checkout. The version with a DLL costs less, and you cannot change it later.
- FundedNext Futures: Rapid Pro has no DLL by default, with an optional add-on that lowers the fee.
- Bulenox: Option 2 pairs end-of-day drawdown with a DLL (except the 25K Fast Track); Option 1 has intraday drawdown and no DLL.
Limits that change as you profit
At some firms the DLL is not fixed. Tradeify raises it to the drawdown amount once a funded account is 6% in profit. On LucidPro and LucidDirect funded accounts above the trail, Lucid replaces it with 60% of your highest end-of-day profit. Apex scales it by tier on funded accounts. Bulenox removes the classic Master Option 2 DLL once the drawdown reaches the starting balance, but keeps the Fast Track one for good.
Worked example: soft DLL on a 50K account
| Moment | Balance | Max loss floor | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start of day | $50,500 | $48,500 | Normal trading. |
| 11:00 a.m.: down $1,000 | $49,500 | $48,500 | Daily loss limit hit. Trading stops until the next session. |
| Next session | $49,500 | $48,500 | The account is still open, with $1,000 of room. |
| Same day with no DLL: down $2,000 | $48,500 | $48,500 | Max loss touched. The account fails. |
The DLL stopped trading before the day's loss reached the maximum loss floor. Firms differ on how they measure the day's loss, so read each firm's DLL page.

Know the riskA prop firm evaluation is a paid service with simulated trading. Most people who buy one do not pass it, and firms change their rules, pause payouts and close. Not investment advice.
Questions
Does hitting the daily loss limit fail a prop firm account?
At the firms that say, no. Topstep, Apex, Lucid, Alpha Futures, FundedNext, Tradeify, Bulenox and MyFundedFutures treat it as a soft breach: trading stops for the session. Touching the maximum loss limit is what fails the account.
Which futures prop firms have no daily loss limit?
Phidias and Take Profit Trader have no DLL on any plan. Most other firms have at least one plan without one, such as Apex Intraday Trail evaluations, MyFundedFutures Rapid and Pro, and FundedNext Flex.
Can I remove the daily loss limit later?
Usually not. Lucid says the DLL choice cannot be changed after purchase. Topstep fixes the DLL once it is added at purchase. Bulenox sets it by the option you buy.
Is the daily loss limit the same as the max drawdown?
No. The daily loss limit caps one day's loss and resets each session. The maximum loss limit is the lowest your account may ever go, and touching it fails the account.
